The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It’s a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT^®. It also gives you a chance to enter NMSC scholarship programs and gain access to college and career planning tools.

The PSAT/NMSQT measures:

• Critical reading skills
• Math problem-solving skills
• Writing skills

You have developed these skills over many years, both in and out of school. This test doesn’t require you to recall specific facts from your classes.

The most common reasons for taking the PSAT/NMSQT are to:

• Receive feedback on your strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study. You can then focus your preparation on those areas that could most benefit from additional study or practice.
• See how your performance on an admissions test might compare with that of others applying to college.
• Enter the competition for scholarships from NMSC (grade 11).
• Help prepare for the SAT. You can become familiar with the kinds of questions and the exact directions you will see on the SAT.
• Receive information from colleges when you check “yes” to Student Search Service.

Fee waivers for PSAT/NMSQT

FACE offers the PSAT test once per year in October to all high school students. Students who are not enrolled with FACE are also welcome to take the the test. The PSAT is the the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarships so we recommend ALL 11th grade students take this test. Fee waivers are available for 11th grade students bases on the qualification listed below. The time to request the fee waiver is NOW as they are available on a first come-first serve basis.  Please contact cindy@faceschool.org to request a fee waiver or get more information.

The College Board offers PSAT/NMSQT fee waivers for juniors who are unable to pay test fees themselves. Schools must identify eligible juniors from low-income families and request fee waivers on their behalf.

There is a limited quantity of fee waivers. Fee waivers are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be available after June 15.

Eligibility guidelines

Because the pool of fee waivers is limited, you are asked to base the number of fee waivers you request on the guidelines outlined below:

• The student must be in the 11th grade.
• The student must be either:
• • A member of a family receiving public assistance
  • A resident in a federally subsidized public housing project or a foster home
  • An enrollee in a program that aids economically disadvantaged students, such as the federal free or reduced lunch program, Upward Bound, TRIO, or a local or state program intended to aid students who are economically disadvantaged

Note: The PSAT/NMSQT program uses the same guidelines as the SAT Program in determining fee-waiver eligibility.

PSAT
Payment for those who have already signed up, is due by Tuesday, October 13. If payment is not received by then, your slot may be given away, as we have reached our test quota. (If you have not signed up, but are interested in taking the test, please contact Cindy so that she can put you on a waiting list.)

The test will be on Saturday, October 17, 8:45am, Crossroads Church (104th & Huron). Cost is $25
